"Thief in the Night"

I'm officially back and posting on a somewhat regular basis I hope. Sorry about the little hiatus I took, between the Christmas orders last month, the Holidays and then regrouping after New Year's some things were put on the back burner. But I hope everybody has had a great start to the New Year, like I said - It's going to be a good one!
So, as I was saying, I'm officially back posting both here and with auctions (link to the right) and I've got a lot of great work planned, but I thought I'd start things off right by posting one of my favorites to paint - Keith Richards.
Anyone who knows me knows I'm a huge Rolling Stones fan, from their first albums of pure blues right through 2006's A Bigger Bang - you can't go wrong with The Stones. They are the best. And Keith is the absolute essence of the group - the gritty, bluesy, rock n roll who gives a damn what you think Im gonna do whatever the hell I feel like doing anyway attitude that is The Rolling Stones. He's it in my opinion.
With all of the great photos of him out there, I really like the photos from his solo "Talk is Cheap" days - with the exception of late 60's and more recent photos - they capture what he's all about. Giving it the title "Thief in the Night" was a nod to my personal favorite song of his.
This is the first time I've painted this in around three or four years and I had a blast. I feel like it was a good way to kick things off this year.

Well it's been exactly a month since my last post - sorry about that! - so I thought I'd check in and update you on what's been going on.

So, basically after my last post, things really started to get insane. The closer we got to Christmas and New Year's the busier and busier it got, so I decided instead of trying to juggle everything and keep everything up, I'd go ahead and shut down for the year as far as posts and auctions go. That would give me a chance to really fine tune all the work I have piling up thats done, and get some more work done as well as get a plan and regroup for 2012. And I'm happy to say that I was able to do just that.

One of my first resolutions is to FINALLY nail down this consistency thing with my blog updates and auctions -

So, I'll begin posting again on the 14th, this coming Saturday and go from there, keep checking back and I hope you enjoy the new paintings to come!

Also I hope everybody had a great Christmas and New Year's, and getting things started right this January - it's going o be a VERY good year!

"Elvira"

Work in Progress

Trying to get better at this consistency thing! Things have been extremely busy over the past couple of weeks, Christmas is coming up fast and Im trying to get all of the orders filled and out the door - so hang in there with me, new posts are coming...

In the meantime I thought I'd post something to give you a peek at a painting Ive been working on.It's a re paint of a painting I did a little over three years ago - check it out below - I actually finished this one up, or thought I did, back in September, I listed it for sale, it sold very well and then I had a little setback with it - through no fault of his own the buyer had to back out.

So I was all set to relist it and give it another go when I thought I would make some changes to it. I think I'm going to open up the background a little bit with some lighter color, and I've got an idea for some spider webbing design back there too, but still keep the dripping effect. I don't know, but I think it'll be that much better if I take some time and make some changes. We'll see I guess...

So anyway I thought I'd post it as is for now, get your opinion on it, and when the changes are made, I'll go back and update the post. See ya soon -

"Living Dead Girl"

Well I'm two days behind but right on time. Here's another new painting I finished up here recently, keeping right on line with the horror themed stuff I've been doing lately.

Last month I got a chance to re watch Night of the Living Dead for the first time in a couple of years and it got me to thinking that I've never done anything related to that, so I thought what the hell. Of course right after I finished this one up I found an even better pic that I could have done, so more Living Dead stuff coming soon.

Anyway, you know the story, little Karen Cooper who was bitten by a zombie and was hiding down in the basement with her spaced out mom and tool of a dad. She had a fever, she was sick, she was dying, and mom and pop weren't exactly making things better. Well she finally died, came back to life, killed her dad - thank you - was snacking on him when her mom popped back down and then she turned around and killed her with a trowel. She tried to get her little dead mitts on Ben but he wasn't having any of it, he got in the basement and re killed pop - thank you again - and re killed mom. And it goes from there...

Classic movie, classic image, and I'm happy with the way this one turned out, I'll be listing it for auction around 9c if you want to swing by and check it out, in the meantime - I hope you dig it.

Christmas Orders

New Listings

Hey there I hope everybody had a great Thanksgiving, ate too much, drank too much and all that...

I thought I'd drop a line or two and update you on the Christmas order deadline. Its official, this Monday the 28th will be the absolute last day for taking orders in time for Christmas. If you've been reading along with my ramblings you know that this year orders started coming in in July, so I got pretty full pretty quick. Staying on top of things helped so there is a couple of days left if you were thinking about getting something in time for Christmas. All commissions taken after that will not get to you until after the New Year.

"London After Midnight"

Here's the second painting done in the set of classic horror I'm working on, Lon Chaney in London After Midnight. I posted a version of this earlier, a different pose same character, but like I said it just didn't feel right for the set. So I got some good practice out of that one and chose this pose. I thought it went along better with the Nosferatu that's already done as well as the paintings I'm doing for the rest of the set. Plus I liked the fact that you don't see this pose very often, or at least I don't. What do you think?

More to come in the set, in the meantime I hope you dig it...

"Mistress of the Dark"

Rolling right along, here's a new painting for you, the ever sexy Elvira...I've done Elvira paintings in the past, mostly bust/portrait type poses though, so this one was totally new ground for me doing a body/figure pose. I always like jumping in on a new challenge when it comes to painting and I like the way it came out - what do you think?
Great practice for me, I'll be doing more figure type work as I move on down the line.

"Mr. Cooper"

Keeping things going, here is a painting I first did back in 2006 and being in a "re do" mood lately I wanted to whip it out and paint it again. This time around I'm a lot happier with it, but then again I'll probably do it again in 5 years and like that one the best - the vicious cycle strikes again!

Im a big fan of Alice Cooper, and when I first painted this I had just found his radio show and was really getting into it every night. You should check it out - you won't be disappointed...

But anywho, back to the painting. This was one I always wanted to re paint, clean up a little, make some changes and just really try and improve it. The name of the game is improvement, so that was the goal. What do you think? Success or no?

After I got finished with the new, I wanted to do something bigger with it, so I came up with the idea of doing a charity auction with it through eBay Giving Works, benefiting Alice Cooper's Solid Rock Non Profit Organization. Ive done charity auctions before, worked with different organizations (more on that later) and thought it would be a perfect fit. The only problem is that Solid Rock is not quite yet on board with Giving Works, so right now I am trying to make that happen. Any help out there would be appreciated! It's a great organization to get involved with!

"London After Midnight"

A practice painting here - Lon Chaney's vampire from London After Midnight. I did this one right after I finished up Nosferatu (pic below) as part of the classic horror set, but changed my mind about including it. I like the way it came out, and will include the vampire in that set, just not this pose. So I got some good practice out of it anyway.

"Psycho"

Finally finished! Classic Movie, one of my favorites, Im a big Hitchcock fan and always wanted to do this scene. It's been along time coming, around 4 years or so. I sketched it out with the intention of painting it right away and posting etc. Well, I got a little sidetracked with other things and put it off, then came back to it, then put it off, and on and on and on. Well I was watching Halloween a couple of weeks ago and after that I popped in Psycho, remembered the sketch, broke it out and got busy with it. I can now say it is FINALLY done. I'll definitely be painting this one again, hopefully the next time around it won't take 4 years.

Beginning Tonight...

Alright here we go! It's been a little over a week and as promised the new work begins posting tonight!

Ive got a lot of new things done and ready to go, and in addition to posting them here, I will be posting them over on eBay beginning at 9 tonight and running over the next few weeks, hopefully all the way up to Christmas...

Happy Halloween...New Work Coming Soon!

Well Its not quite halloween yet, another couple of days, but close enough - happy halloween to one and all! I hope you have a great one, I know I will!

Also, a quick note to respond to all of the emails Ive been getting over the past few weeks about new work being posted...its coming VERY soon! I havent been posting a lot here during the month of October, but that doesnt mean I havent been working on new things. You know how it is, you start out with a good plan of finishing new pieces and posting them as you go along, and then one thing leads to another and the plan is shot all to hell! So I figured I would just concentrate on getting things finished and then start the posting process...so hang on with me they're coming!

Of course I will post them here first with links to where you can purchase if you're interested.

That's about it for now, it's back to work for me, gonna be working all night!

"Nosferatu"

Right now I'm doing a lot of horror related things with halloween being right around the corner, and this is part of a handful of paintings Im doing of all of the classics. When I was a litle kid this was the first movie that scared the hell out of me, I had nightmares for weeks after I saw it. Of course I was only 5 then and looking back now it's not scary at all, but still a great movie.

Anyway I first painted this back in early 2006 and even though it sold well there was something I just wasnt happy about, so I finally got a chance to repaint it and am a lot more satisfied. I told you - vicious cycle!

"Marilyn"

A Marilyn painting I finished up last week and just shipped out today. Up until it was sent to me I dont think I ever came across this photo before and wish I had! Here is one I just finished up of Cary Grant. I had this photo for a few years in hopes of painting it someday but just never got around to it. I had some time here recently and thought Id finally get it together. I like the way it came out for the most part, as with any painting I do for the first time, Ill probably pick the hell out of it until I re do and make some changes. "Black Cat"

Another painting I just recently finished up, another from the comic related ideas Ive been working on. I had just finished up with the Superman (below) and wanted to keep working in that line, so I thought about doing a Spiderman. Well the Spiderman idea turned into a Green Goblin idea and then finally into a Black Cat. I havent given up on the Spiderman or the Goblin, theyre just put on hold for now.

Went with the bust idea, Ive never really tried that before so I thought what the hell. I used a couple of reference drawings for the costume and thats about it.

So, did this about a week ago. Here's the story, Full Moon Horror Convention was in town, Elvira was appearing to sign stuff and all that. Had the idea about a month before the con that I should do a couple of paintings and take them down with some friends - have her sign them for a kick. Put it off, put it off, put it off till the night before, then got really busy. Started about 10 o'clock at night in a friends garage, wound up 6 o'clock the next morning on my back deck finishing them up drinking a big mouth Mickey's. Caught a quick nap and went down around 9 am and she signed them around noon. The rest of the day was a blur and I passed out from exhaustion. She is a sweet lady though and really dug the paintings - I hope you dig it too

"Michael"

A remake if you've been following along (thanks by the way) of Michael Myers. Did the first one last year and wanted to shake the dust off and see what I could do with it now. This picture actually comes from a full on custom poster I did of the original Halloween that I kept for myself, I'll post the full shot some other time. I like the way it turned out, still coming along, only been painting for about 4 years now, so still plenty 'o' room to grow. I think I'll put this one away for a few years though, try my hand at some new things.

"Def"

Mos Def, I did this one for a friend too. The same friend who got the Ice Cube painting got this one. A blast to do this one, I got to experiment with a lot of different techniques, splattering, the ring stains, etc. I wanted a really gritty, grimey look to it. I am still "working" on it here and there, just little things. When it is all finished up I will post a pic of the completed project.

"The Joker"

So here is my latest painting, just finished up on it. I went and saw The Dark Knight the morning it opened and it floored me. You gotta realize it was 8 in the morning when I went and checked it out, the a/c didnt seem to be working in the theater and I was belching last night's whiskey and craving a smoke, running on about 4 hours of sleep - but it didnt matter the movie was that good. With the exception of that fake put on voice they gave Batman it was a 4 star flick. On a suggestion, I decided to do this painting and was really glad I did by the time I finished up with it. I really enjoyed the process of putting it together, and was pretty happy overall with the way it turned out.

"Abbey Road"

Another of my paintings from 2006, of one of my top favorite albums of all time - Abbey Road. Most people say you are either an Elvis fan or a Beatles fan, but not both...for me you are either a Beatles fan or a Rolling Stones fan, and I am a Rolling Stones fan. However Abbey Road is the one exception. To me it is the finest album they put together and definitely a big inspiration for me...like to play this one a lot while painting. Sold this one to my friend Gail over in Britain.

"Thief in the Night"

The Rolling Stones are my favorite as far as music goes, and now you know. Is there anybody cooler than Keith Richards and Mick Jagger? no. Bands young and old aspire to be like the Rolling Stones. Keith Richards is "King of the Riff" no doubt about it. So a little tribute, I put together this painting.

Actually I did this one for the first time about 3 years ago, and it has been a staple in my work ever since. I hope you enjoy... and while you are at it, pick up a copy of Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main St. and soak it all in, it is, in my opinion Keith Richards at his VERY best. With the exception of the song "Thief in the Night" of course...

The first one I did of these was in the Spring of 2005, it was electric blue and measured 3 foot by 4 foot. Sold it to a collector in upstate New York. This one I did in 2006 and is smaller and in shades of green as you can see. I really like painting this one, trying to get better and better with it. I'll definitely revisit it sometime in the future. Until then I hope you dig it...

"Wicked"

I've been wanting to do this painting since I was in the 8th grade. It was deemed "inappropriate" so I couldnt do it then. Which is probably better, it probably would've looked like hot garbage by the time I was through messing with it. It's done now though, and who knows you might think it looks like hot garbage now!
I thought it turned out pretty good, I gave it to a friend and it hangs above his pool table.

"Dead Presidents"

A great image to paint. I like the movie "Dead Presidents", it's not high up on my favorites list or anything like that, but it's a pretty good flick. Better story than movie I think. Anyway I hope you dig it...

"Sinner's Prayer"

The Blues is my music. I love all kinds of music, Jazz, Rock, Blues Rock, Soul...but to me the Blues is number one. And to me there is only one "King" of the Blues - B.B. King. Not only is he one of my favorite artists, but I've always liked the way he's brought a style and sophistication to the Blues, but at the same time keeping the Blues raw and real and down home.

I wanted to pay tribute to B.B. with this painting, trying to bring in all of the emotion and intensity I could, everything I felt when I listened to him play. Of course I always jump at the chance to do a painting based on Blues artists or music because personally I don't feel it gets the recognition it deserves anymore. It should, it definitely should. It should be deeply appreciated, highly promoted, and of course kept alive...

"Cream"

A great band. When I first did this painting it was something totally new for me, I liked the way it turned out but I can see doing it again sometime soon. It didnt do well with sales, and thats cool - maybe just bad timing, so I gave it to my Uncle, who got me listening to Cream in the first place when I was 11. Maybe thats where it was supposed to be along.

"Mr. Jimi"

This one I did along with the Cream painting (above) and a Led Zeppelin (that I will post soon). Kind of a trio of the great blues influenced rock from the late sixties. Now I've actually started a "Mr. Jimi" series of 5 different paintings, including this one. All will have the loud colors etc that to me are synonymous with Jimi and his music...I hope you dig it...

John Carpenter's Halloween is right up there on the list of my favorite movies. That's what got me going to do this painting of Michael Myers - The Shape...I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, but I can see myself doing it again, with some big changes coming down the line.
